Coffs Harbour Bypass
Government Infrastructure & Specialised Transport
Two Switchrooms. One Crew. Two Hours on Site.
The Challenge

Switchroom delivery on an active infrastructure corridor like the Coffs Harbour Bypass comes with tight constraints:

  • Precise placement required — switchrooms are fixed electrical infrastructure, not forgiving of positioning errors
  • Active bypass construction environment — minimal tolerance for delays or extended site presence
  • No opportunity for double handling — the load needed to go from trailer to final position in one movement
  • Coordination with Nepean Power and TFNSW requirements across a government-managed project

Getting it wrong isn’t just inconvenient. On a project of this scale, rework causes downstream delays across multiple contractors and trades.

The Solution

McDonald Contracting’s hydraulic trailer system allowed the team to control placement directly from the transport vehicle — eliminating the need for intermediate handling or secondary equipment to reposition the switchrooms after delivery.

Both switchrooms were:

  • Loaded in-house by Team MC at origin
  • Transported on hydraulic trailers to the Coffs Harbour Bypass site
  • Unloaded directly from the trailer with accurate placement — first time, every time

The hydraulic trailer approach gave the team the precision needed for a fixed infrastructure install, while keeping the operation clean and fast. One crew accountable from the moment the load was lifted to the moment it was set down.

The Outcome

Both switchrooms were delivered and placed within two hours on site. No double handling. No wasted time. No rework required.

The Coffs Harbour Bypass project continues to move forward, supported by the kind of logistics that don’t make headlines — but keep everything else on schedule.

For Nepean Power and TFNSW, McDonald Contracting delivered exactly what critical infrastructure demands: one team, fully accountable, start to finish.

Another job, solved.

This is the kind of work that strengthens Australian infrastructure – efficient, controlled and done right the first time.
